Hello, hello,
After a little hiatus on the “blog” I’m back to give you intel on the latest buzzword in beauty routines: "slugging." So, what exactly is it?
Slugging has been making waves in the skincare community, and for good reason. This technique involves applying a generous layer of an occlusive agent, like petroleum jelly, over your entire face as the last step of your nighttime skincare routine. The goal? To lock in moisture and create a barrier that helps prevent water loss, keeping your skin hydrated and plump.
The term "slugging" might sound a bit odd, conjuring images of slimy slugs crawling on your skin. But don't let that weird you out – the results are totally worth it!
Here's how it works: After you've completed your usual nighttime skincare steps – cleansing, toning, and applying serums and moisturizers – you apply a layer of your chosen occlusive agent. This could be petroleum jelly (vasoline), but there are also other options like thick creams and ointments that can do the job. The key is to use something that forms a solid barrier to lock in all the beneficial ingredients from your earlier steps.
Same applies to your hands. Shower, cleanse and dry your hands, slip into your favorite PJs, and layer on some hand cream followed by a bit of petroleum jelly. By morning, you’ll wake up with hands so hydrated and youthful, they’ll rival your face for attention!
One of the main benefits of slugging is its ability to enhance the effectiveness of your skincare products. By preventing moisture loss, it helps your skin absorb the active ingredients in your serums and moisturizers more effectively. Plus, it can be particularly beneficial during colder months or if you have dry skin, as it provides an extra layer of protection against harsh environmental factors.
But, like any skincare trend, slugging isn’t for everyone. If you have oily or acne-prone skin, you might want to proceed with caution, as the heavy layer can potentially clog pores and lead to breakouts. Always do a patch test first to see how your skin reacts.
So, if you're looking for a way to boost your skin's hydration and get that dewy, plump complexion, give slugging a try. It might just be the game-changer your skincare routine needs!
